Words can be funny. Sometimes, they jump at you when you need to be simple and other times, you can’t seem to remember the ones you need to use at the time. I grinned, maybe too hard, as I watched everyone play Gidi Words. The screaming, the victory dances, the disappointed looks and the adrenaline rush when the timer is trickling down, leave a lasting impact that only board games can.
The beauty of board games, is that it exposes life to you in ways you would never imagine. For instance, I had never thought life was like words and that if you can successfully play a word game, you have learnt the hard truth that – there is always a way out.
Let’s look at the popular word games – Scrabble, Words; when the game begins, we chose simple words, we try to gather points easily till the boards get fuller and we are struck. Just when you think there isn’t any more words to play, something starts to form in your mind and you just keep going.
Gidi Words is a card game that takes it a notch higher. It doesn’t ask you to build words, it requires you to find them. The Nigerian game contains cards that bear the names of people/places and things in Nigerian pop culture. On the card, five words, popularly alluded to the subject, are listed so you can’t mention them. You are required to describe the subject without using the words listed.
Let me explain. Say the subject was J.K. Rowling, the card will list Harry Potter, Grindewald, Hogwarts, Writer and Magic as forbidden words. This means you have to describe J.K. Rowling to your team using other terms while the other team breathes heavy on you, hoping you say the forbidden words to earn them points. All the while, the timer is ticking very fast. Isn’t this life?
I am sure you can picture the struggle. Your brain keeps bringing these popular words to the fore and you fight to push them behind, looking for more words. Does this not seem familiar? You are stuck in life because of several situations and your available options aren’t even viable options. Any attempt to use them could land you in a deeper hole and it seems there could never be a solution.
Also, society is breathing down your neck, pressuring and hoping you make mistakes so they can earn points.
This is a popular tale for the most (read: all) of us. What do we do when we find ourselves here? We don’t know how we do it but we find a way because there is always a way.
Playing Gidi Words, I didn’t release how far I could stretch my pop culture vocabulary or get descriptive without using the popular options. Truthfully, some people failed woefully but that’s okay too. We live to fight another day.
But, hey, if you ever feel stuck, grab a drink and a board game and play it all away. There is a 99.9 percent chance your solution will come from it. Well, if it doesn’t, you get the fun. But board games taught me, this week, that there is always a way. You will always get out of the rut.
