(The Abuja space has been experiencing a rapid tech revolution but a new start-up in the cleaning and domestic sector got our attention. Kureen.co is the on demand cleaning app on the lips of most FCT residents which got us wondering. We caught up with the founders to spill the gist on the brand and it is a thrilling story. Why should we Kureen it?)
Cleaning is an essential activity in human living and it is the one thing that has advantages and no disadvantage. But the world is becoming too fast paced and there is less and less time to do anything domestic since we are all chasing the coins. As this doesn’t give a valid excuse to live in a dirty and disorganised environment, enter Kureen.co – the on-demand cleaning platform that is sweeping Abuja residents off their feet and standing by as the proper partner to assist you in your hustle. We tried the service and it was so seamless that we had to find the brains behind it – the suave, Hafeez Kolawole and the delectable, Zeyi Ohikere.
When the two co-founders got into Conventry University in the United Kingdom, Hafeez to study Mechanical Engineering and Zeyi to study Computer Science, they were strangers whose primary task was to complete their studies smoothly. The universe thought otherwise and drew them together as friends that would later become business partners and change the cleaning/domestic industry in Nigeria. Fast forward to a few years later, they birthed Kureen.co, a cleaning platform that connects cleaners (who are called Kureeners) and the customers. The essence is to give cleaners easy access to jobs and help the customers get trusted hands for their domestic work in easy tech steps. They simply say – Just Kureen it!
We must admit that at first sight, they didn’t seem like tech co-founders. Forgive us, we couldn’t really tell as Hafeez (the CEO) is really groovy and Zeyi (the CTO, who designed the platform) is such a babe! These qualities are not exactly techy and that is the vibe of the Kureen brand – youthful, savvy and fun. They call it ‘The Kureen Experience’ and even hold monthly jam sessions for fellow young creatives and tech guys. Trust us, the entire team is a party; these guys have so much fun working that we want to work with them. But beneath this fun is a work ethic that is scarce as they are completely focused on their USP – cleaning seamlessly with technology.
Speaking on the dream, Zeyi said, “We founded the company when we came to Nigeria after intensive research revealed the gap in the cleaning and domestic help business, especially with the use of technology. Kureen is an on-demand online platform that connects cleaners and cleaning organisation experts to individuals that require such services.
“The Kureen platform provides a convenient, affordable, and secure system for requesting a professional cleaner in four quick steps. We are a very youthful brand that strives to structure the cleaning industry and make cleaning a prestigious skill that generates jobs for the unskilled labour. We are providing a platform for skilled and vetted cleaners to meet clients (who also want their domestic needs met), quality customer experience and a goal oriented skilled environment that seeks maximum satisfaction on both ends.”
This premise caught on pretty fast with the FCT customer base but Hafeez further explained why the business is important for Nigerians. He said, “There is a current digital evolution in Nigeria and Africa leading to more careers and less time for domestic work. We support this movement but we also understand that the last thing anyone wants to get home to is a dirty place. Similarly, a dirty office or workspace slows down creativity.
“We do not want creativity to dwindle because of the stress of cleaning the workspace or home as we realise that more Nigerians find it harder to balance both fronts as the day goes by. Kureen provides these services with a regulated platform where there is no fear of security or quality service. We simply say – Relax, its done.
“Also, we notice the bias against menial jobs, especially cleaning, as the job is viewed as ‘dirty’ and unattractive. Cleaning is a lucrative and honorable skill and Kureen is here to help Nigerians realise the business potential that it has.”
But beyond the cleaning, Kureen has a major goal to increase tech education, hence the use of a digital platform instead of a call and order. However, they realise every day that a lot of Nigerians find it difficult to use digital platforms and are investing in customer tech education. It’s all part of ‘The Kureen Experience’.
However, on a general note, they had some words for intending entrepreneurs and we have heard no truer words than these – Entrepreneurship is not a cool club or the latest thing. It is hard work and requires proper study and research. Always reinvent your ideas and brace yourself to face the worst without breaking down.
