Lifetime’s docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly” is a documentary detailing sexual abuse allegations against R. Kelly, giving a glimpse into the unspeakable harm he reportedly inflicted upon black women.
R. Kelly has over the years been riddled with rumors of abuse, predatory behavior, and pedophilia. In 2006, the singer stood trial on child pornography charges but was found not guilty.
Vibe magazine found that Kelly got married to Aaliyah when she was only 15 and listed herself as 18 while the singer was 27.
According to E Online, It was revealed that the pair were married on August 31, 1994 in a Sheraton Gateway Suites hotel room using a falsified Cook County marriage document, later published by Vibe, that listed Aaliyah as being 18.
Demetrius Smith, Kelly’s former tour manager and personal assistant, spoke about the day in Surviving R. Kelly, admitting it was he who falsified the documents. “I’m not proud of that,” he said. “I had papers forged for them. Aaliyah was underage. We got the marriage license, we were at a hotel in Maywood, Illinois. It was just a quick little ceremony, nothing elaborate. Aaliyah didn’t have a white dress, Robert didn’t have on a tux, just everyday wear. Robert said ‘I do.’ Him and Aaliyah.”

Kelly had in 2018, released a 19-minute song titled I Admit where he addressed the allegations leveled against him.
In this song, he says that he “had to write a song about this, ’cause they always take my words and twist it” and he “never thought it would come to this, to be the most disrespected artist.”
In the song, he also said that a family member sexually harassed him until he was 14.
In another song, his brother Carey accused him of impregnating their 14-year-old niece which Sparkle admitted to in the docuseries.
