All The Artistes Who Have Ever Won The Headies Next Rated Award

The Headies Next Rated Award is an award presented at The Headies, a ceremony that was established in 2006 and originally called the Hip Hop World Awards.

In addition to receiving the award plaque, recipients of the Next Rated honor are given a vehicle at a later date.

Here is a list of artistes who have won the Headies Next Rated award from 2006 till date.

2006 Winner: Asa

Multiple platinum-selling singer, song-writer and performer; Asa was the first artiste to win the next rated award in 2006.

2007 Winner – Overdose

In the second year, rapper Overdose emerged winner in the Next Rated category after being nominated alongside Naeto C, Blaise, Gino, C-Mion, Kage and Lawal Olumo. Overdose reigned in the 2000s with Modenine, Terry The Rapman. He is popular for his 2006 hit song, Don’t Hate.

2008 Winner – Wande Coal

Singer, Wande Coal won the next rated award in 2008 after being nominated alongside GT The Guitarman, Banky W., M.I Abaga, and Cyrus da Virus. He was signed to MoHits records, one of the top record labels in Nigeria as at then.

2009 Winner – Omawumi

Vocal powerhouse, Omawumi won the Next rated award in 2008 after being nominated alongside YQ, MP, Kel, D’Jine. Omawumi was really big as at this time.

2010 – Skuki

In 2010, the award was won by pop group Skuki composed of two brothers: Tumininu Laolu-Oguniyi and Atewologun Laolu-Ogunniyi. They are also known as Vavavoom (Tumininu) and Peeshaun (Atewologun). The brothers won against; General Pype, Mo’Cheddah, Jesse Jagz and D’Prince.

2011 Winner – Wizkid

Same year he released his debut Superstar album, Nigerian international pop star snug the next rated plaque. Wizkid who was Banky W’s protege at that time was nominated alongside; Tiwa Savage and rappers; Ice Prince and Olamide.

2012 Winner – Davido

Davido also won the Headies next rated award in the same year he released his debut Omo Baba Olowo album.   “Back When” and “Dami Duro” were buzzing as at that time. The singer was nominated alongside with; Praiz, Chuddy K, and rapper Eva Alordiah.

2013 Winner – Sean Tizzle

In 2013, Sean Tizzle snug the next rated award, beating out heavyweights like; Burna Boy, Phyno, Seyi Shay and Dammy Krane. His hit song then was ”Sho Lee”

2014 Winner – Patoranking

Dancehall singer Patoranking was the winner of the coveted Next Rated Award in 2014 as he had us all grooving to his hit song Alubarika. The singer won against; Runtown, Orezi, Skales, and Yemi Alade.

2015 Winner – Reekado Banks

Reekado Banks in 2015 won in what would be the most competitive next rated nominations in the awards history. It caused one of the most epic fights between you record label owners – Don Jazzy and Olamide. Reekado was pitted against; Lil Kesh, Kiss Daniel, Cynthia Morgan and label mate; Korede Bello who all had a stellar year. Olamide thought Lil Kesh should have won it and he didn’t hide his displeasure. In response, Don Jazzy asked Olamide to come and collect the car, then Baddo got angry and banned him from the mainland. In the end, Dangote settled their beef.

2016 Winner – Mr Eazi

In 2016, Mr Eazi won the next rated award the year he introduced Nigerians to the Banku music. He was nominated alongside; YCee, Humblesmith, Tekno and Aramide.

2018 Winner – Mayorkun

In 2018, Mayorkun was nominated alongside Maleek Berry, Dices Ailes, Johnny Drille and Zoro but he snug the award.

2019 Winner – Rema

One of the buzzing acts at the moment, Rema won the next rated 2019 award. He is known for hits like Dumebi. He won against Lyta, Zlatan, Victor AD and Joeboy. With just a handful of released songs, the 19-year-old Lagos-based artist has already shown that his music has no bounds.
