Karl Lagerfeld has paid tribute to his seamstresses at the Chanel haute couture show. The 82-year-old star declared his appreciation for the hard working team behind his creative masterpieces on the catwalk at Tuesday's fashion show in Paris who he believes "deserve" to be credited for their input.

Speaking at the star-studded bash, which saw 'Hitch' actor Will Smith and his 15-year-old daughter Willow admire Karl's designs on the front row, Karl said: " They [seamstresses] never get to see the show and deserve to be honoured."

Meanwhile, the German fashion designer has admitted he believes "today's rich" people make people who dressed in designer garments in the past look poor.

Speaking to The Telegraph online about his thoughts on the ever evolving fashion industry, the creative director of the luxury designer brand Chanel said: "90 per cent of them [people] no longer come to fittings.

"[And it is] today's rich make the rich of the past look poor."

Although Karl has revealed he has a "no contact with the clients", he has admitted he has more contact with his 200 employees - who he calls "petites mains".

Speaking about his colleagues, Karl - who launched his eponymous label in 1974 and has boasted over four decades at the helm of the fashion industry - said: "They are passionate - and they are young.

"People sometimes dismiss couture as frivolous luxury. But it also represents jobs."

Meanwhile, the entrepreneur enjoys his own company, and has previously claimed he is independent, he relies on others to bring him meals throughout the day.

Speaking previously, he said: "Mostly I stay at home from the morning until five pm, and I only go out for fittings and shoots because I work at home.

"I like to be alone. I do everything. I don't like people to touch me.

"But there is no kitchen in my house. They bring me food, like at a hotel, for lunch and dinner."
